Sorting and Pattern Making

Collect forest and beach treasures and create patterns with them!
Materials needed: A variety of things from nature (or objects from around the house!)

Patterns are everywhere in nature, and in life in general, so much so that we don’t always realize it! Did you know sorting and creating patterns are considered basic concepts needed for algebra? For this simple activity, collect materials while out on a walk, then sort into like piles. Start by creating an AB pattern, and ask your child what might come next? Continue playing, taking turns making patterns, and making patterns more challenging as your child is ready!

An extension of this learning, and fun fine-motor skill craft idea is to string nature items in a pattern, using a plastic or blunt embroidery needle. Your child might want to lay the pattern out ahead of time, or do it as they go along.
